GREEN MEETINGS

Simply put, a Green Meeting is an event planned to minimize its effects upon the environment. Airlie makes it easy to make green choices when it comes to planning, communication, facilities, activities, transportation, and food and beverage options.

The Center has been a member of the Department of Environmental Quality's Environmental Lodging Program since 2001 and also holds its highest level of recognition, Exemplary Environmental Excellence or "E3" certification. Airlie was the 3rd facility in Virginia to earn Green Seal certification through Green Seal's Greening the Lodging Industry Program, in August of 2004.

GREEN MEETING CHECKLIST:
  1. Choose a meeting facility with a demonstrated environmental commitment.
  2. Locate meetings near accommodations to minimize excessive travel and provide incentives for alternative transportation to and from meetings.
  3. Plan menus focused around abundant, locally produced food (preferably organic).
  4. Encourage attendees and exhibitors to limit printed handouts. Use Power Point or slide presentations when possible.
  5. Look for a facility that invites attendees to conserve energy and reduce waste through linen and towel reuse programs and/or recycling programs.
  6. Plan a nature based activity for attendees such as team building, bird watching or a garden tour.
  7. Consider Green Tags as an alternative energy to power your meeting.
